Mertesacker sustains eye injury, in doubt for Munich game
    Russia Herald
    Wednesday 8th September, 2010
    (IANS)

Central defender Per Mertesacker is doubtful for Werder Bremen's Bundesliga match at champions Bayern Munich Saturday after picking up an eye injury in a Euro 2012 qualifier.

The German football federation DFB said in a statement Wednesday that Mertesacker fractured the curve of the eyebrow in a collision 11 minutes into Tuesday night's 6-1 win over Azerbaijan in Cologne.

Mertesacker, 25, was substituted and taken to hospital where the exact nature of the injury was diagnosed. Doctors said he will not require an operation but it is unlikely he can feature in Munich.
