Capello, Gerrard hail Rooney's match winning performance against Switzerland

England boss Fabio Capello hailed ace striker Wayne Rooney after he scored his first goal for the country in a year.

Rooney, who has been accused of cheating on his wife Coleen, sparked off a romp in Switzerland.

"Wayne Rooney played very well. He was OK mentally. It helped scoring the goal, too," The Sun quoted Capello, as saying.

"I told you before the game he had been OK in training. The players can focus on the game alone. He did that today. He was really happy at the end, as were the other players."

Victory in this Euro 2012 qualifier put England at the top of Group G with a maximum six points.

Skipper Steven Gerrard said: "It was great for Wayne, he was terrific. All the talk before was about Wayne, so it was nice for him to get the early goal. I'm sure that helped his performance. We tore them apart. To be honest, we could have had five or six."

Capello, under fire after England's dismal World Cup, said this was one of his greatest results as manager.

"We are really good in this period because we are fresh. Switzerland, on paper, were the most difficult opponents in our group, so to win here is really, really important," he said. (ANI)
